This year the first and fifth seed in the NFL playoffs went face to face in Super Bowl 55. This Super Bowl took place in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The first seed Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, had an outstanding regular season going 14-2. Mahomes, returning off of a superbowl win, was projected to take his team to victory. This was until quarterback Tom Brady of the Buccaneers stole the show. Tom Brady is known to be extremely successful, and had appeared in 9 Super Bowls prior to this year’s, winning six of them with the New England Patriots. Tom Brady (43) played in his first Super Bowl when Mahomes (25) was in kindergarten. It is incredible to see how far these two successful players have come in their careers. The Buccaneers were the underdog, and no one thought Brady would be able to pull off this win, but nonetheless Brady pulled it off coming away with his 7th Lombardi trophy, winning his 5th Super Bowl MVP.
Brady threw for 21 of 29 with 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mahomes threw for 26 of 49 pass attempts along with 270 yards and 2 interceptions. The Chiefs totaled for 107 rushing yards, Clyde Edwards Helaire, the Chiefs primary running back, led the Chiefs in rushing yards. The Bucs rushed for a total of 145 yards, including a touchdown scored by leading rusher Leonard Fournette. The Chiefs threw for a total of 270 yards, and tight end Travis Kelce led the game in receiving yards, hauled in a total of 10 passes for 133 yards. The Bucs threw a total of 201 yards, and tight end Rob Gronkowski led the game in touchdown receptions. One can say that the Chiefs had a tough time trying to get the offense going, as the Tampa Bay defense was firing at all cylinders. Mahomes ran for a total of 497 yards behind the line of scrimmage, the most by any quarterback this season. The Bucs intercepted Mahomes twice, sacked him three times, and got to him 10 times in the backfield .
In the first quarter, the first points scored were from Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker who booted a 49 yard field goal putting the Chiefs up 3-0. The Bucs answered right away with a touchdown, Brady connected to his tight end Rob Gronkowski for a 8 yard touchdown putting the Bucs up 7-3. To start the second quarter, Brady connected with Gronkowski again for the second time for a 17 yard touchdown putting the Bucs up 14-3. The Chiefs came down the field and had to settle for another field goal from Butker making the score 14-6 Bucs. The Bucs answered again with another touchdown from Brady, who completed a 1 yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown, making the score 21-6 Bucs. To start the third quarter the Chiefs ended up having to go for another field goal, which was good from 52 yards from Butker making the score 21-9 Bucs. After a 27 yard rushing touchdown by Bucs running back Leonard Fournette and a 52 yard field goal by Ryan Succop, the Bucs finalized the score at 31-9. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
