Long, Hard Fought Games for Girls Soccer

By Jacob Rogovin

The Caldwell Chiefs Girls Soccer Team jumped right into the season as they faced one of the toughest opponents they will see all year, Montclair. The girls fought hard but lost to the team which is ranked highly in the state. Grace Conlon scored the lone goal for the Chiefs. After the tough first game the team went on to play several long and hard fought games that went into overtime. Six games into the season, the Chiefs are 1-4-1. This record does not reflect how the team is playing, as every game they have had to battle a talented opponent in one of the most difficult conferences in the state.

The Chiefs have competed hard in every game and have played extremely well. The team has a good mix of young talent and veteran experience. Senior Sophia Perrothers leads the team with 2 goals. Junior Brittany Costigan, senior Grace Conlon, and freshman Leanna Rebimbas are right behind her with one goal each. The team should be proud of themselves considering they had to fill some crucial spots left behind by last years graduated seniors. When I asked senior captain Nina Ricci how the team was coping with those loses she said, “Since we lost a lot of seniors it was important for everyone to fill their roles to the best of their ability. We are lucky enough to have such a talented group of girls to step up and help the team.”

The girls continue their season with Morris Knolls on the 24th of September and Pasack on the 25th. They then face Montclair and West Essex for the second time this season after suffering a loss to both teams. When asked what the goals are for the team going forward, Nina responded, “Going further we hope to keep improving, reach states, and peak as the end of the season comes around. The team hopes to learn from the hard fought games early in the season as they look to improve in their future matches against some tough competition.” I wish the team nothing but the best as the season moves on.
