Covid Protocols for School Sports

Covid has undoubtedly made an impact on everyone’s lives. Especially for the athletes at JCHS. School sports have had certain protocols and rules given in order to have a safe and healthy season. The variety of sports have all faced challenges during the course of the school year. Adjustments ordered to the athletes can interfere with the game-day experiences and the team commitments.

Principal Devlin expresses his outlook on the covid protocols, “Last year was really tough with sports. The most difficult was the Spring of 2020 when we shut down sports all together. We didn’t know what we were dealing with. I felt especially bad for the senior athletes who didn’t get to play their final season at JCHS. To me, in the Fall of 2020, I was just happy as a principal and as a parent that our students got to play fall sports and there weren’t too many shutdowns.” Mr. Devlin makes good points when he discusses the changes and the difficulties pertaining to school sports. He also explained how his son, who is now a senior, had his football season shut down three times in 2020. Mr. Devlin has experienced the impact of COVID on high school sports as both a parent and an administrator. This fall and winter has been even better with very few COVID sports shutdowns.

Overall, things are brightening up for school sports as restriction regulations relax due to COVID’s waning threat thanks to herd immunity. Having seasons interrupted by protocols made students appreciate just how much participation in their sport meant to them, and everyone is happy to be seeing a slow and safe return for their Spring athletic season.
