We’d like to thank the academy…

It’s that time of year again! On February 24 the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, or the Oscars, is set to take place. Film moguls and movie goers alike begin preparing for Hollywood’s annual culmination of the cinematic year. With glamorous movie stars wearing latest designer fashions while the most innovative filmmakers of the century settle into their seats at the world famous Dolby Theatre, the Oscars are a treat for film enthusiasts worldwide. In fact, the event is televised to over 100 countries globally.

This year the nominees for this very prestigious award are nothing less than stellar. Some of the favorite nominees up for Best Picture include the musical “Le Miserables,” starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe,  Steven Spielberg’s historically riveting “Lincoln,” “Argo,” starring the iconic Ben Affleck, and the controversially intrusive “Zero Dark Thirty,” starring Jessica Chastain. Other films with a notable number of nominations are the “Life of Pi,” “Django Unchained,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “Amour,” all up for best picture as well.

With so many choices, the voters of the Academy will surely have their work cut out for them. Movie fans, however, have their own ideas about who should win. Dante Savanello, a sophomore here at JCHS, states, “I’d like to see “Les Mis” win. It’s an enjoyable film geared towards all audiences and Anne Hathaway was great.” It seems as though everyone has an opinion as to who should get the chance to thank the academy and hold up the gold figurine in pride.

Whether one tunes in to see their favorites win the award of a lifetime or just to see the stars decked out in extravagant evening wear, the Oscars promise to be entertaining for audiences of all ages.
