The Caldwell Chiefs’ Track & Field team defeated Montclair-Kimberley Academy and Verona High School Monday to conclude the pre-season, and as of the Paul H. Beck Memorial Relays which took place at Millburn High School Saturday, the championship season is now underway. Judging by the impressive performance of the Chiefs at this highly-competitive meet, it’s safe to say that both the boys’ and girls’ teams have much in store for the important dates to come.
Noteworthy Placements – Boys’ team

The duo of Kaelan Harper (class of ‘26) and Ray Robinson (class of ‘25) led the charge for the boys’ team in the jumping events, earning themselves a convincing first-place finish in the Long Jump relay (LJ) and finishing in fourth place in the Triple Jump relay (TJ). Harper jumped a distance of 20-10.5 for LJ and doubled back by jumping 37-8 in TJ, with Robinson jumping 18-10.5 in LJ and 42-10 in TJ.

Harper then joined his teammates Peter Hatzidoukas (class of ‘25), Rhyin Howard-Dixon (class of ‘25), and Kenneth Monroy (class of ‘26) on the track to clinch a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter relay, placing 6th in a time of 44.95.

Following the 4x100m were the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams in the Sprint Medley Relay (400m → 200m → 200m → 800m). The A Team, manned by Monroy, Howard-Dixon, Alex Morcom (class of ‘26) and myself (class of ‘26), placed 3rd in a time of 3:52.85. The B Team of Matthew Peralta (class of ‘27), William Krusznis (class of ‘25), Enzo Russomanno (class of ‘25) and John Emery (class of ‘26) followed up with a time of 4:02.44, finishing in 4th.

Closing the day strong for the boys’ team, the Novice/Junior Varsity 4x400m relay team ran 3:52.08 to score a 3rd place finish within the Novice category. The team consisted of Will Krusznis, Noah Toral (class of ‘26), Mason Appio (class of ‘26) and Matt Peralta.
Noteworthy Placements – Girls’ team

The girls’ team had a historic day at Millburn this past weekend; the spectacular group of Summer Schlomann (class of ‘27), Tea Fiore (class of ‘26), Fallon Fiore (class of ‘28) and Elena Kearns (class of ‘28) took home the gold in the 4x400m (4:16.09) and placed 2nd in the Sprint Medley (4:38.07). Only one member of the team was an upperclassman and half of the team was comprised of Freshmen—the future of the girls’ team clearly lies in good hands!
The girls’ 4x200m relay team soared to a 3rd place finish in a time of 1:51.46. On this team were Nora Scheid (class of ‘26), Fallon Fiore, Katherine Podias (class of ‘27) and Elena Kearns.
Three of those girls also placed 6th in the 4x100m relay, as Nora Scheid, Fallon Fiore, and Katherine Podias placed 6th in 54.2 with the help of Analise Jenkins (class of ‘26).

The girls’ team also took a bold leap by participating in the 4×1600 meter relay, an event that has not been run by any of the Chiefs in years. Teammates Megan Pac (class of ‘25) Kaitlyn Cabalu (class of ‘25) Emily Glennon (class of ‘26) and Julia Enright (class of ‘26) had a strong showing, placing 2nd.

Later that day, Cabalu returned to the track with Esther Lee (class of ‘25) and Angelica Parathath (class of ‘27) who fought their way to a 4th place finish in the 3x400m Hurdles, accomplishing a final time of 4:25.3.
On the other end of the hurdles spectrum, the 4x100m Shuttle hurdle relay team of Rex Kearns (class of ‘25), Kaitlyn Cabalu, Ella Flanagan (class of ‘27) and Esther Lee placed 6th. Their final time was 1:25.7.

Last of the running events to recognize but certainly not least is the Novice Sprint Medley ‘B’ team of Jada Williams (class of ‘25), Jillian Logan (class of ‘27), Josephina Sahuto (class of ‘28) and Hayden Wilson (class of ‘26), who claimed a 4th place finish with a time of 5:10.02.

Turning to the field events, the girls’ throwers had quite the field day—Isabella Hatzidoukas (class of ‘27) and Addelyn Cook (class of ‘26) teamed up to attain bronze medals in all three throwing events, placing 3rd in Javelin and 5th in both shot-put and discus.

The Novice Discus relay of Sophia Helou (61-9) and Callie Mayes (53-4) also performed well, placing 3rd in their category with a combined distance of 115-1.

Finally, the girls’ jumpers excelled as well, as Nora Schied and Ella Flanagan placed 5th in the High Jump relay.
The road ahead
Following this stellar showing, the Chiefs are already gearing up to compete at Essex County Relay Championships this upcoming Tuesday, April 29. In the face of elevated stakes and much more formidable competition, the boys’ and girls’ relay teams will have to put on their best performances if they’re hoping to score a place on the all-county podium. Regardless of the outcome, Tuesday will undoubtedly be a night to remember if the Chiefs continue to show up to each and every race with as much strength and determination as they did at Millburn!
