Rejected from his mother at birth, bullied all throughout his early years, abused and scolded by his elders; this monkey has been through it all, yet he still finds comfort in his plush toy given to him by one of his only companions, the zoo keeper. One of the most famous stories circulating on the internet around the world is that of a 7 month old monkey from Japan named “Punch-kun” which is translated to his nickname, Punch. It is a story of social rejection, hardship and eventual redemption, touching people’s hearts and inspiring them to be a kinder person to those around them. In early February 2026 people were intrigued by videos of a monkey dragging around a stuffed orangutan. Soon after this Punch’s story started spreading and people started filming the famous monkey when going to the zoo he is located at.
Punch is a Macaque monkey, specifically living in Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. This type of monkey is known for being very affectionate and friendly within their groups. They thrive on physical touch and they crave social interaction. However, they can also be instinctively aggressive towards unfamiliar individuals or perceived threats. When Punch was born, his mother decided she couldn’t take care of him. This was during an extreme heat wave and his mother is a first time parent, so this could be some of the reasons she didn’t nurture him from the beginning. However, his mother was cruel and can be seen pushing the baby monkey around when he just wanted a hug.

She is also seen dragging him through the dirt. When Punch couldn’t get affection from his own mother, he tried his luck at getting some love from the other families of monkeys. However, his peers pushed him around and bullied him as well. The mothers of the other monkeys perceived Punch as a threat to their babies and they scolded him and abused him too.

Eventually, one of the zookeepers that feeds the monkeys saw how Punch was being treated by everyone. When the zookeeper came in, Punch ran to him for protection from the harsh world. He took him inside to feed him privately, without the other monkeys stealing his food. He then gave Punch a stuffed animal monkey to bring him comfort. Punch held on to this monkey tight and it came along with him when he returned to his enclosement. Videos have circulated of him being bullied and running to his plush toy, hiding behind him or hugging him since none of the other monkeys want to hug him. He also keeps a special bond with the zookeeper that gave him this plush and always tries to come inside with him.

Although this story is very sad and people feel a lot of sympathy for this poor baby monkey, there is some good news. As of recently, Punch has begun integrating with some of the other monkeys. He still gets bullied by most of his peers, but he is in fact climbing the social ranks. He is now seen with one older monkey, who sticks by him, grooms him and protects him from the other monkeys.

People on social media are very happy for this outcome and they hope he will continue to make monkey friends and companions, although he will always love his zookeeper and his plush monkey. There was even an instance where his plush got dirty from the rain and the zookeeper tried to give Punch a brand new plush toy, but Punch refused and he decided to stay loyal to the toy who has been by his side through everything.

This story also touches people’s hearts because it can reflect the treatment of people and how some people may feel socially rejected like Punch. Some may feel like they relate to Punch and if they don’t, his story might open their perspective and make them think about how they treat others.
When asking JCHS seniors their thoughts on this viral monkey, one said, “I think they are making a spectacle out of him and they have to stop shoving phones in his face”. This is often overlooked as people scroll and crave content about the situation of this monkey. Now that he is well-known, the zoo keeps him out longer and lets people interact with him more, since his fame is bringing them profit, which isn’t a healthy lifestyle for him. He doesn’t care about being internet famous, he just wants to fit into his environment and people are getting way too involved with what happens in nature, not caring that they are making the situation worse for the monkey, just using him as an entertaining story. Another senior reflected, “It’s so sad” while also acknowledging that “he’s so cute”

which seems to be the reaction most people have when learning about this story. One student also shared, “I feel bad for him because people let him be abused by these other monkeys” which is a good perspective on the story as well, since people are watching the monkey and feel bad for him, but they continuously let him back into the same place that he gets repeatedly abused, since he is already in a controlled environment. If this situation were to happen in the wilderness, it would have been a different story for Punch. Thus, the internet sensation, Punch the monkey, has had a hard life and now will have to grow up in the spotlight, but at least he has his plush, his favorite zookeeper and he is beginning to make friends and become adapted to and loved by the monkeys around him.
