The Housemaid, by Freida McFadden, follows the story of a rich couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, who hire a maid, Millie, to work for them, but deep down, Nina has a motive behind this hiring decision, that will be found out towards the end of the novel. There are currently three books that follow the story of Millie, the maid. The Housemaid, The Housemaids Secret, and The Housemaid is watching. Currently, I have only read the first book, and just started to read the second book. Already, I feel like nothing will compare to the thrill of the first book, but I’m still going to give the novel a chance. This was definitely in my top three of books that I have read over the past few years in high school.
The Housemaid, Just by the title I was immediately drawn to reading this book. Currently, I am taking the English half year course, Monsters In Literature, where we have thoroughly learned about monsters in books, and the roles that they play. For this podcasting project, we had to choose a book that had a monster as the main character. When I was introduced to this book, I immediately wanted to read it. Another reason I wanted to read it was because they are making a movie, coming out on Christmas Day, that will be starring Sydney Sweeny, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar. The movie has been filming all over New Jersey, including places very close to us like Montclair, Ridgewood, Morristown, and Jersey City.
Getting back to the book, the day that I started reading it, I knew that it was going to be one of the books that never gets put down. The suspense that each chapter ended with continued to draw me in and never want to stop reading. I read the entire book in two days, which is very quick for me. I have always enjoyed reading, but I was never really able to read a book that quickly, especially a school book. The book has 325 pages, and that is a lot for me to read in two days, but I just couldn’t put it down.
Overall, I would definitely give this book a 10 out of 10. It was just insanely addicting, scary, mind twisting, and there was a lot of manipulation throughout the entire book as well. The book also consisted of a lot of violence and abuse, which may be a triggering warning for some. I have to admit, I really don’t get scared when I’m reading, but I did get a little nervous reading this book. Once you really start reading, you will find things out about each character that you wouldn’t expect them to have done, or to happen. The first line of the book should draw you in immediately, as it states, “If I leave this house, it will be in handcuffs.”
That line comes from the main character and the maid, Millie. The second that I read that, I knew it was going to be an interesting book. I am trying not to say that much because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who has not yet read the book. One thing that I will say is that every character is not 100 percent in the right, but have been manipulated by someone to turn them the way that they currently are. I highly recommend reading this book, as it has really stuck with me, and if there is ever a day you’re on the beach, you could probably finish it in one day.
