The JCHS Boys’ Varsity Wrestling team is on a roll this season, boasting a perfect 9-0 record and showing no signs of slowing down. This year’s squad has already cemented its place in school history with a landmark victory over Seton Hall Prep, ranked 15th in the state. The 43-24 triumph marked the team’s first win against Seton Hall since 2016, a testament to the team’s hard work and determination.
Led by Coach Sean Romano, the team has built on last season’s remarkable 23-2 record and is striving to reach even greater heights. Their victories this season have been nothing short of dominant, including a 76-4 win over Morris Hills and the historic triumph over Seton Hall.

Senior Ben Lattimer reflected on the Seton Hall match as his most memorable moment of the season, sharing, “Beating Seton Hall was definitely my personal highlight. They’re ranked 15th in the state, so getting that win felt incredible and showed how strong we are as a team.”
The team’s success this season has been driven by its strong senior class, including Anthony Capaldo, Andrew Fonseca, Dominic Holler, Ben Lattimer, Ben Lopez, Mike Mignone, Jordan Orland, and Jake Simone. These seniors have brought skill, leadership, and a winning mentality to the mat, setting the tone for the team’s younger wrestlers. Dominic Holler praised the group’s chemistry, saying, “This group works so well together. Everyone’s been putting in the hard work and staying focused, and we’re determined to keep competing at the highest level for the rest of the season.”

Senior Mike Mignone echoed this mentality, when reflecting on the lessons wrestling has taught him, he said, “Wrestling has shown me the importance of perseverance and self-improvement. I stay motivated by focusing on areas where I can grow, constantly pushing myself to get better. I believe everyone should aim to improve daily, both on and off the mat. My ultimate goal is to reach my full potential and be the best version of myself.”

The wrestlers’ focus now turns to the challenges ahead. At time of writing, the team has two exciting matches at home this weekend: West Essex on Friday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m., and Delaware Valley on Saturday, January 18, at 5:00 p.m. These matches are expected to draw a large crowd as fans rally behind this talented squad.
As the season progresses, the JCHS Boys’ Varsity Wrestling team has proven they are a force to be reckoned with. With their undefeated streak intact, strong leadership, and a relentless drive for success, this team is destined to make history and leave a lasting legacy at JCHS.
