The Caldwell High School girls’ varsity basketball team is gearing up for a season like no other. For the first time in many years, the team has no seniors on the roster. While this presents unique challenges, it also opens doors for younger players to step up and make their mark. With only 17 girls in the whole program, players are predicted to be moving around frequently, but under the guidance of Head Coach Amanda Keenan, the team is embracing this opportunity to grow and forge a strong foundation for the future.
Embracing Leadership and Growth
Junior Téa Fiore shared insights into the challenges and opportunities of leading a team dominated by underclassmen: “The most challenging part of pre-season practice is getting all the freshmen to feel comfortable with the drills that I’ve been doing for two years now,” she said. “With most of our girls being freshmen, it is hard to get them used to our plays, drills with certain names, and the work ethic needed at varsity practice compared to eighth grade. Along with that, the freshmen cannot be timid—it’s important that everyone is trying new things and getting better.”
The absence of seniors has shifted the leadership dynamics on the team, allowing players like Téa to step into a mentoring role. “For me, this season feels different because without seniors, I am one of the leaders on the team,” she explained. “I’ve never been on a team without older girls leading the way, so I have to take what I’ve learned from the captains before me and use that for this team.”
Building Team Chemistry
Despite the youth of the team, the players are excited about the season ahead. Junior Ava Tsettos highlighted the positive energy within the group: “I am really excited about the upcoming basketball season because it’s such a great chance to bond with teammates and make lasting memories. I’m looking forward to improving my skills and overall performance this season.”
A Look Ahead
The team’s pre-season includes three scrimmages: the opener against Cranford on Monday, December 9, at 4:15 PM on Caldwell’s home court, followed by games against Pascack Valley and Colonia. These matchups will prepare the team for their first official game on December 19 against Columbia at 7 PM, an away contest that will test their readiness.
With a 12-13 record last year, the team is eager to improve and establish a new identity. Key players to watch this season include junior Téa Fiore, sophomore Addie Keenan, and freshman Fallon Fiore.
Each brings unique skills and a drive to contribute to the team’s success.
Goals and Motivation
The team’s collective goals center on improving their fundamentals, building confidence, and competing at a high level. Individually, players are motivated to refine their skills and take on leadership roles. Whether it’s in practices or games, the team is preparing both mentally and physically to rise to the challenges ahead.
A Season of Possibility
While this year’s roster is younger than ever, it’s clear that the 2024/25 Caldwell girls’ varsity basketball team has the heart and determination to make this a memorable season. With players eager to step up and Coach Keenan providing strong guidance, the team is ready to embrace their potential and take on whatever comes their way.
