Recently, there has been a lot of talk in the sports world about the use of turf fields. Many believe that they improve performance, while others think that they do more harm than good. Just last year, MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets had lots of complaints from players regarding the playing conditions. Jets Wide receiver Garret Wilson stated that the turf was “garbage” (Via NBC Sports). After many complaints, MetLife changed their turf this year. This begs the question, should other stadiums follow suit?
There have been many incidents where turf has caused injuries to players. Recently, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon only four snaps into his first season with New York. According to Sporting News; “The Giants have lost a jarring number of players to serious injuries at MetLife Stadium in recent years, while opposing players such as Nick Bosa have seen their share of season-ending injuries at the venue” (Via Sporting News).
JCHS’s football field officially had turf installed in 2013, and since then, we have definitely had some issues with it, but it has also been beneficial. According to Caldwell Chiefs Football coach and JCHS teacher Todd Romano; “When you wear cleats, they tend to get stuck whereas grass would cause sliding, which can increase injuries”. According to Mr. Romano, JCHS quarterback Louie Anemone received a turf-related injury earlier this season. Romano said, “I am In favor of turf because you can still play or practice despite the weather, and there will be little to no issue”.
