At a horrible 2-8 record to start the season, the New York Football Giants are one of the worst teams in the National Football League. As a lifelong Giants fan, I thought that they would have a good year after making the playoffs in the year prior, but I was wrong. They finished last year with a record of 9 wins 7 losses and 1 tie to have a 9-7-1 record and being the 6 seed in the playoffs. Their success came from newly-hired Head Coach, Brian DaBoll who won the Coach of the Year award for bringing this team to the playoffs. Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and Dexter Lawrence were also key points of the Giants team’s success. Daniel Jones played like a franchise quarterback finishing with 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, 708 yards rushing, and 7 touchdowns on the ground. Saquon had 1,650 yards of both rushing and receiving with 10 touchdowns. Dexter Lawrence played like the top defensive lineman in the league with 7.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 28 quarterback hits, which was good enough to make the All-Pro second team. They matched up the Minnesota Vikings in the Wildcard winning by a score of 31-24 even though they lost earlier in that season to them, 27-24. The game was won mainly thanks to Daniel Jones who threw for 301 yards, on 24 completions, for 25 attempts. He also picked up 78 yards rushing on 17 carries.
The Giants didn’t end up going too far in the postseason as they got killed by the Eagles 38-7. But, even though they got killed in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, many New York fans believed that it was an auspicious season, a sign of great things to come. Likewise, the Giants coaching staff as they re-signed Daniel Jones to a mega 4-year $160,000,000 contract and other Giants superstar Dexter Lawrence II to a 3-year $87,500,000 extension as well. There was some trouble extending Saquoon Barkley in the Offseason, as he wanted to be paid as a top running back for being one of the best in the league. They wanted to franchise tag him with a deal of $10,100,000 fully guaranteed, but he didn’t like it. Eventually, Barkley agreed to a one-year $11,000,000 deal with a $2,000,000 signing bonus. Another notable player the Giants snagged in the offseason was one of the league’s top Tight Ends, Darren Waller, in return for their third-round picks. The team was looking hungry and ready to win some games and make the postseason.
But things didn’t go according to plan, as they lost 40-0 in their first game against the Dallas Cowboys and then lost four of the next five games after that. Their one win in that span was against the Cardinals, whom they made a 21-point comeback against to win. The only other win after that was against the Washington Commanders with a score of 14-7, a very low-scoring game, but a great performance from the Giants to get another win. But standing at 2-8 after losing to the Cowboys 49-17 this past weekend, it seems like we should just tank and get a good draft pick. With two generational talents in college, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Caleb Williams, it must be best to get a weapon like one of these two to have a better future. It is disappointing watching this team play so poorly, but it could only be good for the future.
Another lifelong New York Giants fan, Dominic Stibryan, had very high hopes going into the season and all his hopes were demolished from day one. Here are his thoughts on the team now and how they might be better in the future:
“Last year, the Giants over-performed. We had so much potential to be a very good team this year, but our expectations just fell short. Going into now, Daniel Jones is out for the season, we have a third-string quarterback as a starter, Darren Waller is on the injury report, and now the locker room is just in a bad mood. The only thing people are looking forward to at this point is the draft to get someone like Marvin Harrison to be a threat to our offense. Last year Sundays were great, this year Sundays are forgettable.” Stibryan and fellow New York Giants fans are hoping that this team can get back together and hopefully enjoy Sundays in the fall and winter.
Let’s hope the Giants can make a comeback, maybe not this year, but in the many seasons to come for this franchise.
