All over the world, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations have been cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns. It became very hard for people to celebrate St Patrick’s Day the way they normally would. Here are some of the best celebrations and traditions that still took place this year!
- Chicago:
Every year, Chicago has huge parades and celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day, including dyeing the river green. This year due to restrictions, the event was cancelled. The weekend before, the river was dyed green as a surprise to those who were sad that the tradition might’ve been broken.
2. Boston:
Although the parade was cancelled, a self guided walk through the Irish Heritage Trail was still an option. The Irish Film Festival also was still celebrated through online viewings!
3. Minnesota:
In St. Paul, Minnesota, a Mask-arade was held. This was a drive-through event that allowed the parade to continue, but in a safe way. People were able to drive through the parade to see the floats and parade stands that were stationary along the route. This event drew in many and allowed a loved tradition to be carried out in a unique way to keep the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day alive.
4. South Carolina:
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina took the floats to the water this year. To ensure distancing and to prevent spreading the virus, boats of floats and attendees filled the coast to celebrate the holiday. Everyone was decked out in green, decorated their boats, and blasted Irish music.
5. NYC:
NYC still stuck to their parade tradition that is looked forward to by many each year. With it being mostly virtual, viewers could safely access the festivities from their own home. The parade has only been postponed once since its start in 1762, and that was in 2020 due to the start of the pandemic. The parade started virtually at 10 am after the live showing of mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
