The JCHS girls basketball team is having a very strong start to their season. This years team has many players who not only have individual talent, but are also able to culminate their efforts and come together as an impeccable team. This year’s varsity squad is led by senior captains Kim Theobald and Kayla Bayard. Currently, the team has a record of 4 wins and 6 losses.Junior Savannah Edighoffer leads the Chiefs in points and rebounds with 156 points and 90 rebounds in only 10 games. The team has had some great wins against Verona, Butler and University high schools. In a tough, recent loss against Colombia, Edighoffer led the team with 18 points and Theobald followed with 12 points. The new varsity players, Kelly Pierce, Nicolette Tufano and Phoebe Bledsoe have been making a major contribution to the team with a joint effort of 32 points and 28 rebounds in total. The girls’ closest game this year was a tough loss to Cedar Grove. With a final score of 43-39 Cedar Grove, JCHS’s Edighoffer, Theobald, and Allie Nufrio were the high scorers as a part of the strong team effort to back up their strong play.
The rest of the season is looking bright for this team. Coach Saito is coming into his third year as the head varsity coach and seems ready to bring his team to a winning season. Coming up, the girls will face Irvington on January 28. Irvington is currently at a record of 0 wins and 7 losses. This will prove to be an opportunity for the girls to battle out for another win and improve their record. Captain Theobald states that, “We are definitely a young team this year, and do not have a lot of girls with experience at the varsity level. One of our main goals this season was to work on playing as one team, with and for each other. We’ve been doing a lot of bonding on and off the court to work on our team chemistry. Our season so far has shown a lots of improvement since November, and it is clear that the younger girls are more comfortable on the court. We just look to improve each game we play.”
The girls basketball team will continue to improve throughout the season acquiring more continuity and teamwork on and off the court. The support of other JCHS students are very important. We encourage you to stop by the next home game and cheer on the team to a victory.
