Caldwell softball season wrapped up in a loss to the Morris Tech Devils, who hold a record of 20-5, in the first round of the States tournament. In the 2019 season, Caldwell was an impressive 15-9 before the game, however, that record is only good enough for fifth in the SEC – American division. Due to the Chiefs 4-7 league record, they are pushed down to fifth place, ahead of Verona and Millburn.
The Chiefs were a force to be reckoned with offensively, averaging 7.4 runs a game, and scoring more than ten runs in eight of their 25 games. Leading the team in batting average is junior Nicolette Luzzi, with a batting average of .545 in 66 at bats. Luzzi also leads the team in home runs, with an astounding eight homers, and RBI’s, with 29.
In the field, the Chiefs are not to be taken lightly as well. Caldwell allows 4.5 runs a game, and out of 25 games, nine of them Caldwell holds their opponents to one run or less. In 2019, Caldwell has gone with only one pitcher. Yes, one pitcher all season to start and finish each game (except one). Senior Bridget Nichols has pitched 141.2 innings and collected an ERA of 3.07. Nichols is 14-9 on the year.
When asked about the 2019 season, Coach McNamara said, “this year we have had a lot of fun. We have worked hard. We have been proud of our successes and the team has bonded, coming together as one. They are an amazing group with a lot of talent. We are going to miss them next year.”
The Chiefs lost to Morris Tech by a score of 9-8 in a very competitive game, where Caldwell collected 16 hits compared to Morris Tech’s 12 hits. The future of Chiefs softball is in good hands with underclassmen like Nicolette Luzzi and Caitlin Cetrulo.
