This year, at the 2026 winter pep rally, the James Caldwell Dance Team (JCDT) made their first appearance. The group evolved from what was previously the Dance Club, originally founded by Kelly Santana ’23, and was recently rebranded by student leaders Caiden Conte, Jasmina Gadhok, and Abbie Moran. All three students have many years of dance experience combined.
For their debut performance, the dance team’s routine was choreographed by co-captains Morgan Miedler and Caiden Conte. The performance was set to a remix and incorporated a blend of hip-hop, jazz, and modern dance. As a newly restructured group at the high school, the JCDT aims to create an inclusive community while sharing a love of dance with the broader school population.
One visually exciting element of any performing art is the costumes—and the JCDT did not disappoint in their debut. The team raised nearly $5,000, a portion of which was used to purchase their eye-catching outfits. The costumes consist of blue and black long-sleeved tees designed by their advisor, Ms. Downey, featuring the JCDT logo and representing one of the school’s colors.

The JCDT also recently held its first showcase in the JCHS auditorium on Friday the 6th. The event, titled “TikTok Takeover,” featured performances from Livingston High School as well. A portion of the proceeds was donated to the organization Performing Hearts. Tickets were priced at $10 for general admission and $5 for JCHS students and staff.
Overall, the team’s student leaders are pleased with the positive response so far. The team currently has nine members, and new members are always welcome as part of the club’s mission to remain inclusive. Members perform at a varsity level and hope to continue building interest within the school community through performances and fundraising events. In a short amount of time, the team has already developed a strong foundation of choreography and collaboration. Depending on interest next season, the club may expand to meet more than once per week.
Do you have a passion for dance or an interest in the performing arts? The JCDT may be the perfect club for you. Practices are currently held on Wednesdays from 3:15–4:30 at Grover Cleveland Middle School. Students interested in joining can contact Ms. Downey for more information or listen for morning announcements regarding practice schedules. In addition, tryouts for the 2026–2027 school year will be held on Monday, June 8th after school.
Congratulations to the dance team on their successful debut, and best wishes for a strong season ahead!
