The start of a new swim season is always filled with excitement, anxieties, and expectation. This year is no different. Since November 17, the swim team has practiced nearly every day in preparation for their first meet on December 9. Although it has only been a few weeks, the team has already done a remarkable amount of work. Every athlete understands that preparation in the early weeks can set the tone for the whole season, and this squad has demonstrated that it is up to the challenge.
One of the most significant responsibilities our swimmers have is the daily trip to NJIT for practice. Our school does not have its own pool, thus the team must train at NJIT. This means lengthy afternoons and evenings spent driving to and from practice, frequently coming home late after a strenuous workout. In addition to a hectic sporting schedule, many of us must manage homework, clubs, and other duties. The drive may appear to be a minor aspect of the routine, but it accumulates with time and demonstrates how committed each swimmer truly is to this sport. It is a sacrifice that requires discipline as well as a strong feeling of team devotion, yet we always continue to turn up every day.
Despite the tough schedule, everyone manages to make practice pleasurable. Before practice begins, anybody entering the pool area will hear jokes, laughter, and discussions echoing off the tile walls. Swimmers taunt each other in an amusing way and make inside jokes that persist throughout the entire season. The humorous mood keeps everyone engaged and makes the long practices seem more bearable. For many athletes, the team transforms into a tiny family in which everyone feels supported and involved, thus making a great team.
However, the enjoyment never takes away from the fundamental aim. When the warm-ups begin, the atmosphere changes. Everyone on the team knows when it’s time to lock in and give their all. Coaches direct each lane with targeted teaching, while swimmers push themselves to finish difficult sets. As the athletes improve their endurance and skill, laps become increasingly similar. Many practices conclude with exhausted arms and burned lungs, which the team anticipates and embraces. Hard effort is a part of the sport, and swimmers recognize that these difficult times will help them perform better during competition.
Although the season has only just begun, the swimmers have already established memories and momentum. From the lengthy rides to NJIT to the shared laughing during warmups, the squad is laying the groundwork for success in the coming months. We understand that obstacles will arise, yet we’re also prepared to face them. The squad is eager to compete and demonstrate how much effort they have put in since November. With focus and teamwork, this season has the potential to be one of the best yet. Remember, “winning isn’t everything, it’s a chief thing!”
