
You may know her from her newest album “ Alligator Bites Never Heal” or from her trending sound “Anxiety” on Tiktok, but the Grammy award winner Doechii has been making music since 2016.
She started getting recognition in 2020 with her self-funded EP “Oh The Places You’ll Go” and her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” that went viral on tiktok in 2021 and got her signed with Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records.
Her story doesn’t start there. Doechii, Jaylah Hickmon, was born in Tampa, Florida where her creative talents started showing themselves early on.
Her journey started with posting covers and personal vlogs on YouTube. At first, many people weren’t attracted to her but over time her music gained an audience on Soundcloud that would be the start of her music career. Nothing stopped Doechii from creating music, not even losing her day job because she continued to persevere and pursue her dreams.
The release of her single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” would be the turning point of her career and solidify her spot as a hot and upcoming artist.
The release of her newest album “Alligator Bites Never Heal” in August of 2024 would be the album that won her a Grammy. Doechii being the third female rapper to win best rap album solidified her astonishing influence in the rap industry.

After her win, she immediately released a new track titled “Nosebleeds” that would highlight her new found home in the music industry. Doechii continues to redefine the boundaries of rap and R&B.
2024 was a huge year for Doechii because she gained tons of popularity as a rap artist. Her popularity skyrocketed after her album was released in August and her feature on Tyler, The Creator’s album, CHROMAKOPIA, specifically on “Balloon”. As her fan base grows, so does her appearances as she’s shown up on The Late Show and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.
There is no saying how far this amazing new artist will go in 2025 and beyond, but she will continue to break and redefine the rap industry.
