Lent is a 40 day period of fasting and repentance observed by Christians in preparation for Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday to commemorate Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness. Lent is a time of both spiritual reflection but also self discipline to create a closer relationship with God.
Throughout the time of Lent, many decide to give something up, whether they are verbal or physical actions during everyday life.
Sophomore, Marlena McSharry, said for Lent she is going to be giving up diet sodas. McSharry stated, “I want to prioritize my health and stop fueling my body with trash. I want to better myself and my health.”
Junior, Liv Plath, said for Lent she is going to be giving up fast food. Plath stated, “I am giving up fast food because I want to keep my health in check and be able to feel better throughout the day. Junk food makes you crash more than it makes you feel energized and good about yourself.”
Senior, Luke Fierro, said for Lent he is going to be giving up cursing! Fierro stated, “I curse so much the words have lost all their meaning and I really want to try and be a better person in 2025. This is just one of the many ways I am trying to better myself as a person and become a better and happier version of myself.”
Lastly, Senior, Nicolina Castellano, said for Lent she is going to be giving up going on instagram for more than fifteen minutes a day. Castellano stated, “I am giving this up because I find myself increasingly picking up my phone and going on social media out of habit. Instead of doing this in my free time I want to spend my time doing something else like reading or doing a bible study. I am hoping to stick by this and break a little habit by going back to other hobbies I enjoy.”
Overall, lent fosters deeper self discipline and awareness as it creates a lasting impact on the person you become after giving something up that has been part of your life for a long period of time.
