The Caldwell High School girls’ varsity basketball team is gearing up for a season like no other. For the first time in many years, the team has no seniors on the roster. While this presents unique challenges, it also opens doors for younger players to step up and make their mark. With only 17 girls in the whole program, players are predicted to be moving around frequently, but under the guidance of Head Coach Amanda Keenan, the team is embracing this opportunity to grow and forge a strong foundation for the future.
Embracing Leadership and Growth
Junior Téa Fiore shared insights into the challenges and opportunities of leading a team dominated by underclassmen: “The most challenging part of pre-season practice is getting all the freshmen to feel comfortable with the drills that I’ve been doing for two years now,” she said. “With most of our girls being freshmen, it is hard to get them used to our plays, drills with certain names, and the work ethic needed at varsity practice compared to eighth grade. Along with that, the freshmen cannot be timid—it’s important that everyone is trying new things and getting better.”
The absence of seniors has shifted the leadership dynamics on the team, allowing players like Téa to step into a mentoring role. “For me, this season feels different because without seniors, I am one of the leaders on the team,” she explained. “I’ve never been on a team without older girls leading the way, so I have to take what I’ve learned from the captains before me and use that for this team.”
