The Met Gala 2024 and the History Behind this Iconic Night in Fashion

The time has officially come! The first Monday in May has arrived. The Met Gala is such a huge event in the fashion industry. It all started back in 1948. It is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Originally, it was just an annual event where members of high society would gather and have a meal while checking out the latest exhibit. Over the decades, it has evolved into a true celebration of fashion in an art form.

In the 1970s, it became a more formal affair with all of the guests following the simple dress code of “black tie.” In the 1990s, Anna Wintour, who is still the editor-in- chief of Vogue today, truly transformed the event into the exclusive and fashionable event that it has become today. Many well-known celebrities are invited to attend this event. There is a tightly-controlled guest list for this event and it has become one of the biggest nights in fashion and pop culture.

Whether it be your favorite singer, musician, athlete, influencer, or Kardashian, you will see a familiar face on the famous Met Gala stairs. Celebrities go all out to match the theme for this event. This year’s theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The dress code was described as “The Garden of Time.” Every Met Gala is hosted by Anna Wintour who has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1995. She hosts the event alongside her co-chairs. This year the co-chairs of the event were Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Lopez. Some familiar faces on the red carpet this year were Kim Kardashian who was wearing Maison Margiela, Gigi Hadid wearing Thom Browne and Chopard, Cardi B wearing Windowsen and Kendall Jenner Givenchy. Some of the most eye-catching celebrities there were Zendaya and her two costumes; which consisted of outfits made by Maison Margiela and  her second look being vintage Givenchy. Tyla was also ranked high up on the list with her iconic sand dress made by Balmin.

The Met Gala is an event where it is normalized to make bold creative statements through the crazy outfits that most celebrities wear. The Met Gala red carpet is almost like a huge theatrical performance where stars flex their creativity and push boundaries with fashion. A very iconic theme for the Met Gala was the theme of “Heavenly Bodies,” in 2018 was known to be one of the bests. All of the invites had to dress in outfits inspired by the Catholic church and religious imagery. Rihanna famously dressed as the Pope that year which was super bold and talked about for a while. Another one of the most memorable themes was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in 2019. Everyone wore loud colors, bold costumes, and all different kinds of shapes. Lady Gaga did an epic outfit change right on the red carpet while she went through four different super dramatic looks. Some of the looks might not be your cup of tea but, it is smart to try and admire the boldness and artistry behind them. The Met Gala is such a special moment for all fashion designers and celebrities to really push their boundaries with fashion. Overall. I always look forward to this event because it is just so entertaining as a fan to judge all of the looks that everyone shows up in.
