Now that the AP portfolios have finally been submitted, students can finally relax after months of hard work. In order to honor their hard work we are showcasing the last AP Art Students. This month we will showcase Ceci Lomauro. We will showcase the meanings, processes, and materials behind each of Ceci’s spectacular pieces.

Ceci’s sustained investigation revolves around reflections and what it is about them that has such a hold on people. She experimented with pieces regarding reflective surfaces but also the symbolism of reflections in regards to time. Ceci experimented with a variety of mediums as well in order to express and showcase our obsession with reflections.

Name: Missing Piece

Materials: Prismacolor colored pencils on paper

Meaning: This piece was inspired by the two way mirror in Harry Potter in which the user can see other people who share shards of the same mirror. This piece is meant to show other ways in which mirrors can be interpreted when used by two different people. She used a dark bold outline around the shard to draw attention to it. She used varying values to create shadow and perspective on the hand.

Name: Missing Piece

Name: The Little Girl in the Mirror

Materials: Graphite Pencil and Acrylic Paint on Paper.

Meaning: This piece is meant to be a reflection on time. When we look in the mirror we see our current selves but inside of us there is still a small child. In this image, the person looking in the mirror sees their younger self that still lives inside of them. The piece also plays with the idea that back in ancient times, people believed mirrors were some sort of time traveling device that was able to alter time.

Name: N/A

Materials: Charcoal pencils on paper

Meaning: Similar to the “missing piece” this image depicts a girl holding a broken shard of a mirror. This time we see the same girl except in two different positions. While the girl is turned to the side, the reflection of her eyes stare straight at us. The composition of this piece was meant to create a dark creepy feeling. The background is dark to contrast with the girl in the forefront and the outline around the shard of mirror is darkened in order to draw focus to it.

Name: Reflective Obsession

Materials: Prismacolor colored pencils on paper

Meaning: This piece deals with human obsession to  fixate on their physical appearance, going as far as to look into any reflective surface possible even if it’s unconventional. The piece deals with reflections in unfamiliar surfaces as opposed to reflection in mirrors. She used a variety of colors and values to emphasize the sunglasses and bring attention to the girl in the reflection.

Name: Spoon Buddies

Materials: Prismacolor Color Pencils on Paper

Meaning: This piece was inspired by a picture that Ceci and her friend took at a restaurant. She was really intrigued by the way their reflections were distorted on the spoon. She really liked the perspective and the way their image was warped by the curvature on the spoon.

Name: The Tree

Materials: Graphite Pencil on Paper

Meaning: This piece is meant to have an eerie feeling. The broken mirrors on the tree are meant to take the place of leaves or fruit that would have once been there. It symbolizes the dark and twisted aspects of the mirror and how it can be damaging to people’s mental images and health.
