If one thing can be expected this winter, it’s a riveting season of Caldwell Basketball. Headed by Varsity Coach Mike Mancino, the boys are hoping for a promising outcome. After returning four of the five starting players from last year, and being moved into a new division, the Chiefs seem to have the preseason momentum in their favor.
Although last season was filled with some hardships, the new team is ready to put that behind them for this new season. Unfortunately, after the state was forced to keep changing the requirements to make the state tournament, due to statewide weather issues, the boys program was not able to qualify for the state tournament. However, this did not mean that they stopped battling in every game that they played. Highlights of the season included wins over Nutley, Butler, and Glen Ridge. The season ended with a tough loss against West Essex in the Essex County tournament in a game that came down to the very last minute.
Now, the team is ready to come back and find greater success this season. Senior Hunter Smith gave his views on the upcoming season: “I think this is going to be a good season. I know the other seniors and I really would like to go out on a high note.”
The Caldwell Chiefs Girls Basketball program also is hoping for a successful season. Last year, the girls had an impressive season winning their opening game against Irvington, and also collecting wins against Milburn, University, and Glen Ridge. The team is lead by Varsity Coach Ryu Saito. Both programs this year will open their seasons on the road. The girls will face up against Holy Angels and the boys will be at Golda Och. We wish good luck to both programs this season and encourage students and faculty members to go out and support the Chiefs this winter season.
