As with every NFL offseason, there have been trade rumors circulating around the league, mock drafts galore, and, of course, retirements. One of the most high profile retirements has been WR Julian Edelman, 34, of the New England Patriots. He spent his entire 12 year career with the Patriots after being drafted in the 7th round, and now talk has begun regarding whether or not Edelman deserves to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Edelman had a great career as one QB Tom Brady’s go-to guys during his tenure in New England, winning three championships with the team in 2015, 2017, and 2019. He also won Super Bowl MVP for Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams. He has had an outstanding post-season career and has one of the most famous catches in Super Bowl history in the Patriots’ historic comeback against the Falcons in Super Bowl LI. 

On the other hand, Edelman lacks some of the major achievements most players have entering the Hall of Fame. Edelman was never selected to an All-Pro team, nor was he ever a Pro-Bowler. He also only had two 1,000 yard receiving seasons, a milestone for any receiver, and only had a career high of seven touchdowns in one season, a low mark for a top wide receiver. 

Some attribute some of Edelman’s career to QB play and Tom Brady, who can make almost any receiver look good. He struggled in 2020 with injuries and with Cam Newton as his QB, playing in just six games and earning zero touchdowns. 

In a few years Edelman will be eligible for the Hall of Fame. Up until then pundits and fans alike will continue to debate whether or not Edelman will make it, and even if he will, another discussion will arise as to whether or not he deserves it.
