After a tumultuous year, it is time to honor the television and film released in 2020 and early 2021 and have a night of pure Hollywood entertainment. On February 28th at 8PM EST, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting the 78th Golden Globe Awards to announce the winners chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The nominations were virtually announced on Wednesday, February 3rd by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson.
This year’s Globes are going to look different, as Tina Fey will be zooming in from New York’s Rainbow Room while Amy Poehler will be live from Beverly Hills. The nominees will also be zooming in for the broadcast. In terms of honorees, Jane Fonda will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Fonda is an actress, producer, documentarian, entrepreneur, activist, and author. She started her career with the iconic Barefoot in the Park and continued to work at 80 years old with the Netflix series Grace and Frankie in 2015. Norman Lear, who started as a comedy writer for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis radio show, is going to be the third recipient of the Carol Burnett Award. Lear started as a comedy writer for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis radio show. After founding Tandem Productions, he wrote, produced, and directed various television sitcoms and a movie.
Unlike previous years, the Netflix production company is taking over traditional media by receiving the most nominations. The streaming service got twenty two nominations as a motion picture distributor and twenty nominations as a television distributor. These nominations surpassed the long established Sony Pictures Classics, Warner Bros Pictures, and Universal Pictures. Other streaming services such as Amazon Studios and HULU gained recognition with ten nominations each. Mank received the most nominations for a motion picture and The Crown secured the most for a television series or program–both got six. Mank is directed by David Fincher, who is known for Fight Club and The Social Network. The screenplay was done by his father, Jack Fincher. Mank is a black and white film about Herman Mankiewicz as he races to finish Citizen Kane. The movie stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried who both snagged nominations. The Crown’s fourth season premiered on Netflix in November. Creator Peter Morgan says the fifth season coming in 2022 will bring the end to the popular series about Queen Elizabeth II’s life. The show averaged more than one hundred million viewers making it one of Netflix’s top series.
James Caldwell High School senior Jamie Pierce shared that she is, “beyond excited for the Golden Globes despite this year’s circumstances. We can appreciate the shows and movies that we all enjoyed in quarantine.” The full list of nominations is recorded below.
