Students piled into the cafeteria. It has transformed from a normal lunch room, to a bright and festive lounge. A stage was set, lights were tested, mics and amplifiers were plugged in. Couches, tables, and seats were arranged, all facing performers eagerly awaiting their turn to wow the crowd. The annual coffee house was about to begin.

Coffee house is an event that encourages students and teachers to show off their musical talents. Friends and teachers came together to watch the performers sing and play their favorite tunes, as they ate doughnuts, sponsored by Glaze, bagels, sponsored by Manhattan Bagels, and a variety of homemade baked goods, and of course, coffee.

Although the coffee house encourages a casual and guilt-free environment, the actual set-up for this event takes a tremendous amount of organizing and effort. A crew of Juniors became in charge of coffee house with the help of Mrs. Watts, Detective Mazzeo, faculty staff, and many parents who sold baked goods throughout the show.

This year, the theme of coffee house was “Dancing Through the Decades.” Hosts wore crazy outfits and styles that depicted various decades. Disco kings and queens, classic rock stars, and countless throwbacks were present. People even wore their favorite band shirts such as, Green Day, Kiss, Sublime, David Bowie, The Beatles, and many more.

In total, there were twenty-three acts. Performers sang original covers, classic good time songs such as “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, and so many more. There was a variety of genres, which showcased the diversity of music. There were many types of different instruments played throughout the show as well, such as ukuleles, guitars, drums, etc. and even a violin.

The coffee house is one of the events that focuses upon music. It is a vital part of the holiday spirit here at James Caldwell High School and has become a favorite annual occasion to many.
