Reviewing Celebrities’ Halloween Costumes: From Pop Culture to Classic

Halloween this year was a bit more complicated than past years considering the COVID-19 pandemic, and this exciting holiday was difficult to celebrate in a traditional way under these circumstances. Parties were canceled, trick-or-treating was limited, and many families were stuck at home watching scary themed movies. However, many well known celebrities found a way to celebrate and dressed up in some very interesting costumes.

Starting on the funny side, Canadian rapper and singer The Weeknd nailed his rendition of the Nutty Professor from the 1996 film of the same name starring Eddie Murphy. The chart topping musician does not resemble this character in any way out of costume, but he could actually pass as Eddie Murphy in this outfit. This costume is seriously impressive, and I think The Weeknd could actually portray this character in a remake, or at least be a very reliable and accurate stunt double.

Reality star Kim Kardashian also nodded to pop culture with her costume. Her and her children dressed up as Carole Baskin and tiger cubs from the popular Netflix series ¨Tiger King.¨ Her friend Jonathan Chebin dressed as Joe Exotic, also from the hit show. This costume is not only creative, but also adorable, especially the addition of the tiger cubs. Considering the popularity of ¨Tiger King,¨ which was released earlier this year in March, there were many costumes similar to Kardashian´s. However, this is the best costume I’ve seen of its kind.

American singer-songwriter Halsey is no stranger to creative halloween costumes, and is known to throw a halloween bash in Hollywood every year. However, with the pandemic, this sadly was not possible. This did not stop the ¨Bad at Love¨ singer from creating an absolutely incredible halloween look. Halsey decided on a look from Tim Burton´s iconic film ¨Corpse Bride¨ by dressing up as Emily. Halloween may not be a competition, but Halsey found a way to win it anyway with her unmatched makeup skills.

Actor and comedian Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka, along with their two children, had an admirable halloween photoshoot inspired by Mel Stuart´s 1971 film ¨Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.¨ This costume is the definition of inventive. This family managed to put an impressive modern twist on a classic movie, not to mention that Harris´ son actually really resembles Peter Ostrum as Charlie in the original film.

The ladies of the hit CW show ¨Riverdale,¨ Lili Reinhart, Madelaine Petsch, and Camila Mendes stunned in their matching ¨Powerpuff Girls¨ costumes. This costume was an impeccable idea, especially considering the limited options for a matching costume for a trio of women. All three of the stars replicated the original ¨Powerpuff Girls¨ excellently, so it´s no wonder their costume amassed over eight million likes on Instagram.

R&B star Janelle Monae had by far the funniest costume of 2020 in my opinion. She may look like she is just dressed as an ordinary insect, but she is actually portraying the fly that landed on Vice President Mike Pence´s head during the Vice Presidential Debate. This mishap was the subject of many memes and jokes online. This costume is absolutely hilarious, and undeniably creative. I was seriously impressed to see this on my feed on social media.

Clearly, celebrities had to get creative with their Halloween celebrations this year considering the pandemic, but this did not limit their ability to dress up in some pretty impressive costumes. After seeing how intriguing the costumes were this year, I can only imagine how they will be post-pandemic, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for these famous Halloween aficionados.
